Feed for cod
Experimental protocols
The project is mainly a networking one and a limited budget requires narrowing of perspectives and focusing the experimantal activity on topics where the need for added knowledge is most important. High quality fish meal and protein of vegetative sources will be used to determine the protein requirements in cod of different size groups.
Experiment A will be run in Norway (Havforskningsinstituttet)
· substitution of high quality fish meal with protein of vegetative origin
· feeding experiments in tanks
· 100-500g cod
Experiment B will be run in Iceland (University of Holar)
protein of all marine origin (high quality fish meal)
feeding experiments in tanks
500-1000g cod (alternatively 30-100g cod if additional financiation will not be successful)
Experiment C will be run in Norway (Akvaforsk)
substitution of high quality fish meal with protein of vegetative origin
feeding experiments in four net-pens
> 1000g cod
A consumer test (COOP Sweden) will be carried out on the product from these trials.
Experiment D will be run at the Faroe Islands (Fiskaaling A/S) – alternatively in Iceland (University of Holar)
protein of all marine origin (high quality fish meal)
feeding experiments in tanks
30-100g cod
The experiments will start in 2004.
Due to different location of feeding experiments, a standardization of experimental setup is impossible, but as the experimental locations are in similar range according to temperature, salinity and density of fish, experimental conditions can be adjusted to some degree (density of fish, feeding regimes etc.), while others will always differ (illumination, resirculation etc.).
Description of facilities, experimental conditions and variables will be made for individual feeding trials and throughout the feeding period:
