Feed for cod
There is a rapidly growing interest for cultivation of cod around the Atlantic. Wild catches of Atlantic cod have been reduced from approx. four to less than one million tn in the last 30 years. Total production of framed cod is estimated to reach one million tn within the next few decades, which would represent 18 billions NOK (18 NOK/kg). The cost of feed is 50-60% of the total production costs in framing of cod. A 10% reduction in feed costs will therefore give a minimum 5% reduction in total production costs.
The aim of the project is furthermore to bring the Nordic countris together in their research on feed for cod by creating extensive network of feed producers, producers of single feed components, future cod farmers as well as scientists within this field of reserach. Presently there is very limited knowledge and experience available regarding the correct composition of feed for cod. This information is however crucial for the cod farming industry. As feed is the biggest single variable cost in farming of cod, high cost of feed is considered to be the main drawback in obtaining economical feasibility in cod farming.
